How to Differ from other writing genre....???
Narrative and recount in some ways are similar. Both are
telling something in the past. So narrative and recount usually apply Past
Tense; whether simple past tense, simple past continuous tense, or past perfect
tense. The ways narrative and recount told are in chronological order using
time or place. Commonly narrative text is found in story book; myth, fable,
folklore, etc while recount text is found in biography.
The thing that makes narrative and recount different is the
structure in which they are constructed. Narrative uses conflicts among the
participants whether natural conflict, social conflict, or psychological
conflict. In some ways narrative text combines all these conflicts. In the
contrary, we do not find these conflicts inside recount text. Recount applies
series of event as the basic structure.
The Steps to Make Narrative Writing
- Decide on a topic --- what is the story you want to tell?
Look
over the list of suggestions or brainstorm a few of your own. Remember, a
narrative is a story with characters, setting, problem, and solution. Be
sure to choose a story that has all the parts of a good narrative.
- Establish the setting
Answer
the questions Who? What? Where? When? And Why?
These questions help to narrow and describe the setting before the problem or
action takes place.
Use the center block of Four
Square to jot ideas for:
·
Who was there before the action?
·
What were they doing before the action?
·
Where were they before the action?
·
When does the story take place?
·
Why are these people there?
Setting
is important in many ways. Not only does it affect the action and events
in the story, but it can also affect the way characters act.
- Decide on the events of the story. These events should be actions with strong, active verbs. If there is no action, there is no story.
Use
the first three squares of the Four Square to outline the events
that create the plot. The fourth and final square is reserved for the
“Big Ending” ! The “big ending” should give the outcome or solution to
the problem that is identified in the plot.
- Details, Details, Details
Details
are the way to elaborate on the events that create the plot. These
important bits are the way to explain “what happened” and “how it
happened”. Think of how it would be if a friend tried to tell you what
happened in a movie you have not seen without any details of what and how
things happened. You would not understand the movie. Details help
the reader to see what you see.
Remember
that each square of the Four Square represents a new event, and
you should take the time to really detail each event before moving to the next.
- Connect the events
Connectors
are a good way to connect the events in the story. They are used to show
the time relationship between the events. Connectors have a dramatic
effect. In one story it may be meaningful if something happens immediately.
In another story, if something happens 10 years later, it may be
equally shocking.
Add
the connector words to the top, left corner of each of the squares in the Four
Square.
- Add “vivids”
“Vivids”
are those words that add life to your writing. They bring the reader to
the scene of the story. Vivid language lets the reader know what the
writer sees, hears, feels, smells and tastes. Vivids include clear,
concise and “vivid” adjectives to describe people or things. Clear
adverbs help to clarify when, where, why or how certain actions or events
occurred. Specific nouns let the reader see what you see, strong, select
verbs demonstrate the actions of the characters just as you want them to
be. Remember to include dialogue to express mood, feeling, emotion and
point of view. Figurative language and sensory imagery are also excellent
examples of vivids. To help select your vivids, ask yourself “like what?”
when telling about an event. Choose vivids that show, not tell.
Select appropriate vivids at appropriate times in the story. Don’t force
vivids in, just to have them in your story; they are only useful when they add
strength to the writing.
Vivids
are placed just below each of the details outlined for each event in the Four
Square.
- “Hook” your reader
Remember
the purpose of the narrative is to entertain the reader. It is important
to attract the reader’s attention right from the start so they want to read the
story. On way to attract the reader is to use a “hook”. A “hook” is
a one-sentence device placed at the beginning of the story and generate
curiosity in the reader. The “hook” is then followed by the setting
paragraph, the event paragraphs and the conclusion paragraph.
Some
examples of “hooks” include:
·
The Question – What could be worse than
spending the night in a haunted house?
·
Dialogue --- “Run and don’t look back!”
shouted Sammy.
·
A strong opinion or feeling --- There
are no such things as ghosts!
·
A single word or sentence fragment ---
Me? Scared?
·
Figurative language --- That pumpkin
was as big as a school bus!
·
Leave ‘em wondering --- There was a
sound coming from the attic, and I knew it wasn’t a mouse.
Example :
Climbing a Hill
A few months ago, precisely on August 10th 2013 me and my friends "Rismakansa" like spritual organisation visited to one of our friends, Jenter’s home at Pubian. We are interested to visit there because the
environment is still cool and beatifull there are some rides that interesting. Friends who come with us there are myself, Stefany, Anik, Betty. There are also Andra, Riki, Rian, Ari, and Jenter as a guide.
The first trip starts with our transportation rental, "public transportation”. Pretty amazing transportation for a trip that was not
exactly near. Actually we tried to rental a private car because it is more convenient,
but the views from other friends who want to join and not enough car charge.
As well as you know the street to Pubian is not pretty good. Because many streets that have not been clear. And
there are have posts along the way that we should give some money. It’s like
paying the toll road tax. And it’ll become memories in our brain. So, we spend
our time with jokes.
Arriving at his house, Jenter served us with a variety of food and invite
us to look the big stone like a house . In our imagination that stone is probably as beautiful stones that exist
in Belitong. But, when we arrived in there all is not as we imagine. Stone was
at the peak of hill. Yeah, our journey has been begun. Climbing a hill never
planned in advance, not listed on the agenda as well us. And, we climb to the Muslim
women's clothing abaya and ballet shoes and even some cursing wages. This is
very troublesome indeed our ascent. But
behold, no one complained. All optimistic. There are stung with the spirit one another. Our first trip through happiness, some times
even capture images.
And when I was nearing the peak, suddenly I felt very tired. My heart pounding "dag dag dig dug dig dug". I
remember when it used to be in Vocational High School, I passed around the
field twice campus, my heart had not strong. Suddenly I wanted to see the rock with
give up. For me distance of a few meters is sufficient. I want to fall down, but
I'm also not sure if I was able to come down from the hill. I feel like fainting.
I stopped and rested on my knees. I over sweat . My heart beats fast. Suddenly Stefany
that was in front of me reached out his hand for me. He pulled my hand, lead me
until I got to the top. All was not yet finished, some of my friend lost, Anik,
Betty, and Rian. We are trying to find and we found them. It turns out that because
of their preoccupation with taking photos left behind and use a different path.
.
At the top I flung myself on the rocks. I set my breath and I circulate my views. And "wow"
that’s amazing view I see from above with all my struggle paid off. It is
remarkable journey, and really unbelievable climbing Muslim by using this abaya.
